Then came the storm
Haiku Sequence for a Storm on Hollywood Beach
dark horseshoe of clouds
lightning zig zags glow sharply
nature grasps more tightly
thunder shakes broadwalk
timid bathers flee the beach
birds remain cautious
electrons charge the waves
stunned sea falls silently calm
while the dead man floats
life’s veil soon dissolves
I stand, muted clarion,
a silent witness

Try to Remember
for Meghan and Xan
i wish i could remember
what i knew when i was five
i think i had the answer then
having just recently arrived
i recall
that i could change into a dragonfly
and when you know how to do this
you know everything
no wonder i cried
when they sent me off
on that first day of school
